If tax cuts really did create jobs, as the Republican mantra asserts, we should be awash in jobs, since the Bush tax cuts are still in place, President Obama and Congress had given additional tax cuts to 95 percent of the American people, and interest rates are at a record low. As the last ten years of fairly stagnant job growth proves, tax cuts in and of themselves do not guarantee job creation, sans increases in demand for consumer goods and services. Merely granting “the rich” tax cuts, rather than tax credits specifically designed for American job creation, leaves them the option of either shopping for lower-cost labor overseas or risking the funds in the next investment bubble. On the other hand, programs to assist the poor and the unemployed will immediately be invested back into the economy through recipient bill payment and retail purchases. “The rich” are not creating jobs in America anymore; they are shipping them overseas in exchange for cheap consumer goods. Therein lies the real problem.
Congress needs to face facts, abandon ideological orthodoxy, and pass the American Jobs Act!
Hello Rick!
We agree tax cuts to the rich have proven not to be a solution-like bailing out wall street – banks-biz with out getting signing a contract &expecting them do do the right thing & creat jobs out of the goodness of their hearts. We see how that has worked for us.
Instead they used our tax $$ to get profitable & NO jobs were created & certainly did not pay back a cent to the American People.
So as you said-simply granting big biz “Wishes” doesn’t work for tax payers. Yes I believe the real problem is getting Congress to look past their own political gain ,face facts, abandon ideological orthodoxy, and pass the American Jobs Act -
otherwise we will be far worse off than we are now ;leaving our fate in the hands of big business greed & we know how that has worked for us!!
Americans must get involved; we can see what happens when politics get in the way of progress & whats good for the American People!
Look forward to hearing from you again Rick!
Clearly you understand the
I am retired. The only benefit I get is seeing others work! If America gets back to work, I will be happy! It is depressing to see so many people out of work!
Norma,
You feel that way because you love your country, care about the American people & care about what is happensto your fellow man!
In my book you are a card carrying ,caring American Patriot ! God Bless you & all of those who feel-think as you do!
Anyone unemployed more than a year or two and over 60 has almost zero chance of employment. What will we do after all retirement savings have been used up? Who will care?
Dear Connie ,
Your concerns about those who remain unemployed for more than a year or two and are over 60 have almost zero chance of getting a job is factual & millions experience the pain daily .
You ask who will care ? It will be friends-family-associates just like other main street Americans who are in the same boat!
Jobs, unemployment benefits, health care, savings, college funds gone, homelessness becomes a real possibility.
However this does not need to be the end of the story for American workers! We do have options!! We are alive-we can vote & we can take action!! Giving up is not the American way!!Gray Matters Coalition will be posting a petition next week & it will be a
valuable tool in helping American’s reclaim their jobs, life & their American Dream.
YEA IT DOES LOOK LIKE ANYONE OVER 60 IS FACTUAL..Yes I AM OVER 60…so what… What ever happen to the 60’s are now the may even 40’s…What a bunch of !!!. Times of age are non descriptive today…It seems like those of us in our 50′ 60’s are looked at more elderly then our grandparents… BS… my grandfather owned a cleaners till I don’t know what age…older…he walked every day to town to the store because that’s what made him want to live. Of course he had family but this was his and keep his life to live… Now for the baby boomers – we have knowledge, experience, staying power, know we have to have income to support us maybe even our kids…not only that but giving us reason for living because we have given so much of life to gain the experience to higher our lives, now to be looked at has exonerated, I will never forget a movie I saw years ago… “Wolfen” you may have gotten your technology but you’ve lost your senses
The American Jobs Act needs to be passed and as soon as possible. We are tired of certain members of Congress dragging their feet on anything and everything that is suggested as a solution. We are tired of their solution; lower taxes on the wealthy and corporations, which has been in place for years and is not a job creater, as they proclaim. People are getting fed up with the games played out in Congress while the middle class sinks further and further into proverty.
Amen Norma!!
Thanks for speaking out !
It’s time for all of us to come together & take action at the polls -because our votes are just about all we have left !Doing nothing could mean losing our votes as well.
Please check our blog next week – WE ARE taking action in posting a petition that Protect all American workers & will give us back our Civil rights in the work place. Appreciate your comments Norma.
It almost does not effect me. I cannot get a job. Though(because I was told this) I was considered the best student to pass through my university in a generation, and when I taught, my evaluations were the highest, politics will continue to plague me. I have done a high percentage of the jobs that there are, always paid below the average, and when injured, always the act of another worker, or once because I was attacked while working, workers compensation turned out to be a negative equation for me. In 1990, based on information gathered by me, and actions taken by me(the embassy intelligence chief was too arrogant and stupid to act on the matter), the American Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was not attacked by a truck/fertilizer bomb. That based on information I passed to the Central Branch of Malaysia, because the Americans would not take it, the South East Asian Al Qaida Command was captured nearly intact. I found later that substantial rewards were offered for such actions. I approached two US Senators,(from my state) and two congressmen. I was rebuffed. I could go on for hours, but, what is the point. I sort of got that when I was beaten nearly to death by six naval cadets and all the records kept disappearing. So, as far as I am concerned, unless you are an honest person, leave me be. Just don’t expect me to put my life on the line any more. My wife said that if I had wanted to work for the “Company”, because of my ability to fit in and get people to talk to me, that I would have been one of the best they ever had. Problem. Killing is against my religion. So. I shall continue to watch, and live as I do, sliding ever down. I need someone honest to look into what I just said. One witness is already dead. If you are able to do something, and I would expect results, perhaps my faith might be a bit restored.
Dear John,
It is always difficult and sad to read these kinds of stories !
We do not know who to tell you to contact as our areas of experience are in EEO law & civil rights law pertaining to work place injustices against older workers & seniors.
Should we learn of someone that may be of help to you, we will forward that informaiton on to you.
Kind regards ,
GMC Team
Pass the BILL!
Yes Tom, We agree!!! It’s the best thing we have doing for us so far! It’s on step forward & let’s take it!
We need this as the President has said. We need to own and take care of our country and it’s people and let the rest of the world do the same. The profit generation and mindset of Wall Street greed have seen it’s high watermark and must end now. The Mitch McConnels and John Boehners of the world need to help or get out of the way. We all must live as one or go down as one.
Alfred! Ditto!! American is a team effort and each & every member of the team is very important!!! Loving our neighbor & doing unto others-as we would want done to us, is a very good start!!
thanks for the great comments. GMC Team
I am very much in favor of the President’s job proposals and I would like to see a positive and timely response from our congress.
I was very disappointed with this bill. Only a small percentage of the total will be spent on helping the unemployed GET A JOB.
I think at this point, we need a job bill that focus on unemployment and getting the jobless into jobs. The people who’ve been unemployed the longest need the most help. They would really benefit by having the government put them into a job, whether by employing them directly or giving huge incentives to private industry to hire them. Many of the proposals to give the unemployed more help through their local Workforce Centers while they receive unemployment benefits sound promising, but how can the the people who don’t get unemployment benefits access these?
I do not like the temporary reductions in Social Security. Many people and businesses will take the money and bank it or pay bills, which will not stimulate the economy.
What about more weeks of unemployment? I have no job and have had no unemployment since 2010. What are the single people who are running out of money supposed to do? They don’t even get welfare in most states.
Joan,
The unemployed who have no job & unable to recieve benefits of any kind , are typically 50++ers ,have no health ins. , & the exact group “the invisible people” we are most concerned about &
that need help the most. Your plight is addressed in the peition we will be posting next week & it is our mission to address & remedy these injustices .
One thing that President Obama said in his speach that really hit home with us ;was that ‘EVERYONE IS IMPORTANT”! And you are one of the important one’s Joan!!
Keep up the good fight!! GMC Team
Joan! Clearly unemployment benefits need to be extended to the unemployeed – good will starts at home -our unemployed are &
have been the back bone of American and deserve help now!
Joan, this bill is not perfect but it is clearly the best thing we have going for now.
If you will address specific issues you take exception with in another comment, we will try to address those issues or find some one who
can to your satisfaction.
Thanks, GMC Team
clearly needs work,
The bill is a good start but has too many “loopholes”. Jobs must be created immediately, not a year from now. The long-term unemployed will not receive the job training mentioned, only those who are still getting UI benefits will. There are no UI extensions for those who have long stopped getting benefits (99ers and other UI “exhuastees”). They number anywhere from 4-7 million and need help. There is none for them in this bill.
I normally really don’t leave remarks on websites, but I figured this might be the time. Well done!
Well, I hope the job bill helps someone. I’ve been unemployed and looked for work for FOUR YEARS. I was forced to take early retirement with reduced benefits. Worked for 25 years. New boss had her favorites harrass me and others. I’m a retired Med Lab Tech and the health care field doesn’t want me anymore. The only jobs for me are for totally unskilled workers; $8-9 an hr. WOW….almost enough to pay for gas.
My parents both just died, 1 mo apart. My inheritence is the only reason I can stop looking for work.
Thanks Congress for all your “help”….NOT. In the end, death has given me income at a painful price.
BTW: my lovely replacement was a new graduate with 1 yr of experience. I DELIBERATELY retired before she started, to save myself the agony of TRAINING her.
